Summer Trimming

trimJust because it’s summer, it doesn’t mean your yard gets to take a vacation. While you shouldn’t trim trees in the summer, plenty of other foliage in your yard still needs to be taken care of. And the occasional summer thunderstorm can knock out tree branches, which do need to be removed for the health of the tree and for safety.

In Douglas County, Oregon, summer temperatures have air conditioners working overtime. You’ll need to prune and trim any shrubs or bushes that might inhibit your AC unit from working properly. Ideally, bushes should be kept a few feet away from the unit.

You’ll also want to keep bushes close to the house trimmed. This makes for a manicured appearance and also helps minimize pests that might take up residence in them. Trim off any dead branches or areas first, then gradually shape the shrub for the desired effect.

As a general rule, if a bush or shrub blooms in the early spring, you’ll want to trim/dead head it in the summer. However, if it blooms in the late spring, wait until fall or winter to trim.
